The condition to qualify for divine experience is submission, which is accepted in both Hindu and Islam.
To submit is to accept that repair is beyond the capacity of soul and reins are handed over to God. It is somewhat similar to patient's submission to the doctor. Realizing that getting cure is beyond the one's capacity, patient accepts whatever doctor administers - word to word and without any question.
Thus to submit is to accept orders word to word without any doubt or question.
Submission to saint is easier than to God. Saint or Guru is a person who has acquired divine happiness. He then can disburse to others what he has got. You can see Saint but not God. God cannot speak with you directly, Saint can. Saint explains philosophy, removes doubts, not God. Countless souls have acquired divine happiness through Saint. Just make sure that Saint is genuine.
There is a difference between submission to God and submission to religion. Submission to God takes you to God's abode while submission to religion takes you to heaven.
To go according to the diktats of religion about day to day behavior is to try for heaven or jannat, which is a fool's choice. Because heaven is very much similar to extra luxurious life style, which is full of mind's troubles like jealousy, hatred, anger and so on.
Submission to God is achieved through constant remembrance of God and only God. Day to day rituals, clothing has nothing to do with it. In fact, Krishna says, ' Dismissing all religions, Submit to me and only me....'

Religion is usually divided into two aspects, one related to society and the other related to securing infinite happiness. The first one deals with dress code, behavioral norms for peaceful coexistence. The other one is related to worship of God. Worship of God has two aspects: One related to physical activities and the other related to remembrance through mind. Remembrance of God is the MOST IMPORTANT one as this the only aspect that deals with purification of mind. Outward activities would be a physical drill unless accompanied by remembrance of God.
Then it would be stupid to stick to irrelevant societal norms. It is like preserving the bottle and not taking care of the elixir inside. That happens many times and the very objective of peaceful coexistence is lost. Outward appearance does not matter, what matters is keeping heart busy with God.
