So we are discussing the perils of egoistic behaviour.
Durwasa was a great ascetic. He had many spiritual powers and hence he thought that he was above all irrespective spiritual status of anyone.
Once he and his disciples traveled to king Ambarish who was a true devotee of God. That was a day of fasting. Fasting is one of way to worship God. According to the rules fast must end in the evening.
When Durwasa visited Ambarish he was offered food by the king. Durwasa said that he and his disciples would first take bath in the river and would take food afterwards. He along with his disciples proceeded to river for taking bath.
Evening approached. Ambarish was in dilemma. If he did not eat food, it would be disrespect God and if he ate food it would be against the tradition that guest should be offered the food first. In the end he decided to take a spoonful of water to end his fast and then waited for Durwasa to return.
Durwasa came back and he came to know, through his spiritual powers, that Ambarish had taken a spoonful of water before offering anything to him. He was angry.
He shouted at Ambarish,'How could you drink or eat anything before it is offered to us. Do you know who am I? I must punish you.' And he created a dreaded witch by his spiritual powers and asked that witch to kill Ambarish.
God, who is present everywhere and who is always prompt to protect his devotee, was till this time quite, knowing that his devotees are quite tolerant. But when it came to killing of his devotee, he did not think for a moment and asked his Chakr to protect Ambarish.
Chakr first killed the witch and then went after Durwasa to kill him. Seeing the ultimate non-stoppable weapon was after his life. He went running everywhere, to creator of universe Brahma, to destroyer of the world Shankar and in the end to God himself.
God said,'I am sold to my devotee. For them it is only me who they know and for me it is only they and therefore I work according their wish. I am helpless. I cannot protect you.'
Durwasa was frightened to the end of hid heart. He did not know what to do. He approached Narad who advised him to ask pardon where the crime was committed. Durwasa the went back to Ambarish and fell into his feet and asked for forgiveness.
Ambarish was a genuine saint. His heart was full of kindness and compassion. He accepted the apology of Durwasa and requested Chakr to spare the sage and thus Durwasa was saved from the death.
Ego is dangerous. Be wise keep ego away.
