There is a story in Kenopanishad. Once demigods won a battle against demons. They became conceited thinking that they were invincible and that they were the most powerful in the world beyond the reach of any other. Their mind filled with ego. The celebrations were on.
Seeing this, God thought demigods must be cured of the cancerous tumor. So he went in the skies of heaven and stood there with his tremendous shine.
People of heaven wondered who that person was in the sky whose shine was many-fold compared to their king Indr.
Indr was so conceited that he did not think it fit to go see himself the stranger. He asked Agni (demigod of fire) to go and inquire about the stranger.
Agni went to the celestial person and asked ,'Who are you?'
Answer from God was a counter question ,'Who are you?'
Agni replied ,'I am Agni'.
God asked 'What do you do?'
Agni replied' I can burn the whole universe with my fire'.
God put a dry blade of grass before him and asked 'Could you burn this?'
Agni laughed and went ahead to burn the dry grass blade. But to his sheer surprise he couldn't burn that grass blade! He lost all temperature and became cold himself!
God who empower Maya and it is Maya which in turn empowers the soul. The powerhouse God switched off the power supply. Fire's power to burn was lost! Agni went back red faced! When asked about the stranger, he replied 'I do not know who he is!'
Indr then assigned Vayu (demigod of wind) the same job.
Vayu went to the celestial person and asked ,'Who are you?'
Answer from God was a counter question ,'Who are you?'
Vayu replied ,'I am Vayu'.
God asked 'What do you do?'
Vayu replied' I can blow the whole universe with my roaring winds'.
God put a dry blade of grass before him and asked 'Could you blow this?'
Vayu laughed and went ahead to blow the dry grass blade. But to his sheer surprise he couldn't blow that grass blade! He lost all the speed and became standstill himself!
Gain the powerhouse God switched off the power supply. Wind's power to flow was lost! He too went back red faced. When asked about the stranger, he replied 'I do not know who he is!'
Indr then went himself! But God disappeared and Indr did not even get to see God. Instead appeared there was a power of God named Uma.
Indr asked her,'Mother! Who was that person who was there before you came?'
She said,'He was God himself! He wanted to give you message that never be conceited and egoistic. Whatever power any soul gets has origin in God and it his grace that any soul can even perform some action.'
The point is power makes person filled with pride and ego and under its influence when decisions are taken, destruction is certain.
