So far it is
established that it would be a great folly to identify 'I' with the
body.
What about mind? Is 'I' the mind? Because mind
seems to be controlling all the senses. If mind is absent senses do
not work. For example, while listening to anything if mind wanders
here and there, words are not heard even after entering the physical
ears. It means that 'I' does not need body to function and hence 'I'
is not the body but it could be mind. Mind can perform all the
functions of all the senses without assistance from physical senses
as it happens in dreams.
All the actions originate in mind and therefore
mind is the sole doer of actions. Thus there are firm indications
that 'I' is mind. However it cannot be true.
Consider the deep sleep. During the deep sleep,
mind does not function. Yet the bliss, called deep sleep is
experienced by someone. On getting up, we say 'Oh! I had an excellent
sleep. I did not see even dreams!' Which means 'I' is present even if
mind is absent. Therefore 'I' cannot be mind.
What about intellect? Intellect is not different
from mind altogether. It is one of the states of mind in which
decisions are taken. Hence when mind does not work, intellect too is
at rest.
Thus 'I' is not the physical body, it not the mind
nor intellect! Thus by elimination rule one one conclusion
prevails..'I' is different from Body, mind and intellect and that it
must be soul.
