After the mediation bid
was unsuccessful, Krishn returned to his kingdom of Dwarika. Pandav
(Ydhishter, Arjun, Bhimsen, Nakul, Savdev) and Kaurav (100 brothers
including Duryodhan) began war preparations. They approached other
kings for the support in the war.
Arjun and Duryodhan
went to Dwarika. Duryodhan reached first. Krishn was taking rest in
his room. Duryodhan went inside and sat near by krishn's head. Arjun
too reached there at the same time and sat near Krishn's feet. Both
waited for Krishn to be awake.
As Krishn opened his
eyes he saw Arjun whowas in his line of sight because Arjun was
sitting near his feet. Krishn said, 'Welcome, what brings you here?'
'To seek your help in the war', said Arjun. Durdhan who was sitting
there interrupted and said, 'I came earlier'. Krishn looked at him
and said,'O! You are here too!' Then said,'Both of you are my
relatives and hence I'll help both of you. On one side will be my one
aukshahini army fully armed and on other side will be me without any
weapons.' One aukshahini consists of 21,870 chariots, 21,870
elephants; 65,610 horses and 109,350 infantry. Chariot and elephant
need two persons one driver and the other fighter, horse rider is
one. Thus it is a huge army. Durodhan jumped at the first option
while Arjun was extremely satisfied to have weaponless Krishn on his
side because he knew that no one could defeat God.
In early days wars were
fought in open and only in day time. Nights were rest times. Wars
began with blowing of bugles. When the armies of Pandav and Kaurav
assembled on the battlefield of Krurkshetr, warriors blew their
bugle. Krishn was in driver’s seat for chariot of Arjun. Arjun
said to Krishn,’Take my chariot in the middle of the two
armies. Let me see who I am going to fight with.’ Krishn put
the chariot in the middle. Arjun saw that he would be fighting
against his own relations, teachers and the ones who he respected
most. He then turned to Krishn and said, ‘They are all my
relatives and teachers. I don’t want to kill them to become a
king. Many people will be killed in this war. Their wives will become
widows and many of them would engage in illicit relations and will
become characterless. I will have to bear the outcome. I don’t
want to fight this war.’ Arjun put his bow aside and sat down.
Krishn was watching him. Arjun then said, ‘O! Krishn, please
guide me. I am your disciple who has complete submission to you.’
