Detachment means mind should
be free from attachments to any worldly object or to worldly person.
Krishn tells in Gita,‘Mind cannot stop
working even for a fraction of a second.’ Mind’s job is
non-stop thinking. It will think. Whatever you do, it will not stop
thinking.
There was a man. He worshiped a ghost. The ghost
was pleased and appeared before him and said,’You are my boss
now. I will do whatever you ask me to do. But remember, I must have
work. I will not remain idle.’ The man agreed thinking that he
had a plenty of work for the ghost. The man ordered him to bring
food, to plough the field, to build house and so on. Ghost completed
each work quite fast and came back to his boss asking for more work.
Boss was a worried man. He went to a pandit (a wise person) and
asked his advice. Pandit advised, ‘You put a pole of around
10-20 feet; hammer it in the ground. Then ask that ghost to climb up
and down till next job is assigned to him.’
Same is mind. It works continuously, non-stop like
a ghost. Its job is thinking. Some stupid people try to stop thinking
of mind through meditation, not knowing what Gita says about the
mind. It is futile attempt. The machine is so designed that it is
always on.
A two wheeler, bicycle or bike, is balanced as
long as it is moving. It can be moved in any direction but the motion
cannot be stopped else balance is gone. In the similar way, mind
keeps on moving. Its thinking can only be diverted to wherever
desired but thinking in unstoppable. Thinking can be done in two
areas – material or divine. Material area about sensual
indulgence and about worldly relations. Divine area is about soul and
its relationship with God. Any kind of relation can be established
with God, the best being romantic relationship.
Better to drive the mind to the land of
happiness(divine world) than to the land of miseries(material world).
Choice is yours. It is a tragedy of human life that the first choice
is not selected.
