Krishn says, 'You have right to action, and not to its result. Actions should not be executed keeping in mind the result and the worldly attachment should not lead to non execution of an action.'

Meaning that everyone should take actions as duty and accordingly actions should be performed. Result should not be the criteria.

Student should study because it is duty of student to study. Study should not be linked to marks obtained in the examination. That is action of study is important and not the result and hence result should not be given any importance. If no importance is given to pass or to fail, there would not be any joy or sorrow on passing or failing. Such actions are called as detached actions. Detached actions are the best action because they are non-binding actions. No next life outcomes are associated with detached actions.

Nurse does detached action in hospital. If baby is born she congratulates the parents and if dead baby is born, she says sorry to the parents. She is not overwhelmed by joy in case of birth nor by grief in case of death.

Chef makes food for his master with all care not because of attachment but because of fear that any mistake could cost him the job. He has attachment to his family. But when wife makes food for husband, she does it out of attachment to her husband or mother makes food out of attachment to her child.

People work in office in detached manner but in home they behave with attachment.

If a judge has positive or negative attachment towards any of the party, he cannot make justice. And if injustice is made, it would be punishable by spiritual government.

We have attachments to few people in our family and friends. Rest everywhere detached actions are performed. We must learn to perform detached action even for our family members.

Detached action does not mean negligence. On the contrary detached actions are performed with utmost care. If a sick child cries, nurse would not give child any thing that would be detrimental to child’s health while mother might feed child out of attachment which might worsen the condition of child. Thus detached actions are the best actions.
