Arjun says to Krishn ‘Mind is the most
fluctuating object in this world, extremely difficult to control.’
There are at least two instances which show that the same Arjun had a
great control over mind.
When Dronachary was teaching archery all of the
Pandav and Kaurav, he asked all his disciple to hit an arrow in the
eye of a bird sitting on the tree. Each disciple stretched his bow,
put arrow over it and pointed it to the bird. Dronachary asked
everyone what did the disciple was seeing. All of them replied bird!
Tree! And the like. Only Arjun said, ‘I am seeing only eye of
the bird, nothing else.’ Such a concentration of mind! Almost
impossible!
On another occasion Arjun visited heaven. Most
beautiful of the heavenly damsels – Urwashi was performing a
dance. Arjun, who had a good knowledge of dance, was continuously
looking at her. His eyes were fixed on her feet watching their quick
and rhythmic movement. Indra, who was the king of the heaven and
father of Arjun thought Arjun was mesmerized by Urwashi. That night
Indra asked Urwashi to please Arjun. So Urwashi, with her full charm,
went to Arjun in the night. Arjun woke up. He saw Urwashi in erotic
mood but said,‘Mother, what brings you here at such an odd hour
of the night?’ Urwashi was taken by surprise! ‘Neither
heavenly demigods nor greatest of ascetics can resist me. Who is this
human calling me mother even after knowing my intents?’ She
thought and went back.
This Arjun says ‘ It is extremely difficult
to control the mind.’ Krishn replies,’You are right!
Without any doubts, mind is difficult to control. But it can be
restrained by constant practice and detachment.’ As stated
earlier practice is to take mind to God by always remembering him and
detachment is the knowledge that there is neither happiness nor
sorrow in this world.
